After expanding the runway to handle larger jets for international flights, the SMC chair and CEO announced that building a more convenient terminal is the next priority.
“Next to that is to build a passenger terminal with a seven-million passenger capacity and eight boarding bridges for a more comfortable experience,” Ang said during the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines-SMC aviation forum on Monday.
“It should be finished in less than three years,” said Ang, who added that they would soon award the construction deal to a contractor.
Congestion in the present terminal would ease in a few years once the new facility is finished.
No conflict with Kalibo Airport
Ang said earlier delays were also caused by the need to purchase property from private landowners surrounding the gateway, which is also known as the Godofredo P. Ramos International Airport or Caticlan International Airport.
While SMC expands Boracay Airport, the Department of Transportation is focused on privatizing Kalibo International Airport, another gateway to Boracay located a few hours away.
Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista stated that there would be no conflict with Boracay Airport, as both transport hubs cater to different markets.
Boracay still a hot destination
In a recent update, AirAsia Philippines said it was on track to surpass last year’s passenger numbers to Boracay, driven by strong demand from new Clark and Cebu routes.
From January to August, the airline has flown 1.1 million passengers to Boracay, accounting for 85 percent of total trips in 2023.
