Tourism adds ₱2.35 trillion to PH economy, accounts for 8.9% of 2024 GDP

Tourism contributed 8.9 percent to the Philippines' gross domestic product (GDP) in 2024, according to the latest Tourism Satellite Account compiled by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

Why it matters:

The data confirms tourism’s rebound and sustained momentum post-pandemic, as spending and employment in the sector continue to expand.

By the numbers:

  • Tourism direct gross value added (TDGVA) reached ₱2.35 trillion, up 11.2 percent from ₱2.12 trillion in 2023

  • Internal tourism expenditure (inbound + domestic) rose 13.1 percent, hitting ₱3.86 trillion in 2024

  • Domestic tourism grew by 16.4 percent to ₱3.16 trillion, maintaining its dominance as the sector’s main driver

  • Outbound tourism expenditure soared 37.5 percent to ₱345.68 billion

  • Inbound tourism saw a modest 0.4 percent growth, at ₱699.98 billion

  • Tourism employment rose 6.1 percent to 6.75 million, accounting for 13.8 percent of total employment in the country

Context:

Tourism-related spending spans accommodation, transport, food services, shopping, entertainment, and travel services. The steady rise in tourism employment and expenditures highlights the sector’s expanding role in economic recovery and inclusive growth.

What’s next:
