The companies announced the upcoming feature on Monday, saying it is designed to deliver a faster, more seamless payment experience for Filipino consumers.
The enhancement enables users to link their Visa credit or debit cards to the GCash app and use those cards as the funding source whenever they make QR payments at merchants that accept GCash. Previously, users without enough wallet balance needed to cash in through linked bank accounts or transfer funds before completing purchases.
The big picture
The launch reflects the growing convergence of digital wallets, payment cards, and QR-based transactions as financial technology firms seek to simplify digital payments while expanding consumer choice.
Visa said every card-funded transaction will be protected by Visa Payment Passkey, its biometric authentication solution built on Fast Identity Online (FIDO) standards. The technology allows consumers to authenticate purchases using fingerprints, facial recognition, or device PINs instead of passwords or SMS one-time passcodes. According to Visa, biometric authentication can reduce fraud by up to 50 percent compared with SMS-based OTPs.
“Consumers increasingly expect flexibility in how they pay, and are looking for payment experiences that are simple, secure, and seamless. This exciting collaboration expands that flexibility for consumers, allowing consumers to use their Visa credentials across everyday digital payment journeys including QR payments. This takes us forward in making digital payments more accessible and convenient for everyone,” Visa Philippines country manager Jeffrey Navarro said.
Why it matters
The partnership comes as digital payments continue to gain traction in the Philippines. Citing Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas data, the companies said digital transactions accounted for 57.4 percent of the country's total monthly retail payment volume, underscoring continued momentum toward cashless commerce.
“This new feature further enhances the GCash experience for millions of Filipinos, giving them greater freedom in how they pay and manage their funds while maintaining the experience they’ve come to expect from GCash. This partnership also reinforces our shared trust with Visa to expand financial inclusion and bring more Filipinos into the digital economy,” G-Xchange Inc. president and CEO Ren-Ren Reyes said.
Visa and GCash said the initiative supports broader efforts to expand digital commerce and financial inclusion by allowing consumers to pay wherever and however they choose through integrated cards, wallets, and QR payments. —Daxim L. Lucas | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
