SM Hotels and Conventions Corp. (SMHCC) is doubling down on experiential tourism as travelers increasingly seek heritage escapes and nature-centered destinations outside Metro Manila.

Why it matters

The strategy is helping legacy and resort properties under the SM group strengthen their positioning in the Philippines’ recovering leisure and domestic tourism market, with industry recognition now amplifying their visibility across Asia.

Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay and Pico Sands Hotel in Batangas recently secured multiple honors at the Haute Grandeur Global Awards 2026, a global hospitality recognition program based on guest feedback and service excellence metrics.

Taal Vista Hotel received distinctions including Best Historical Hotel in Asia and Best Destination Hotel in the Philippines, while Pico Sands Hotel earned awards such as Best Scenic Environment Hotel in Asia and Best Coastal Hotel in the Philippines.

The big picture

As competition intensifies in the regional tourism sector, SMHCC is positioning its hospitality portfolio around differentiated travel experiences—from cultural heritage stays to family-oriented coastal retreats.

In a press statement, SMHCC executive vice president Peggy Angeles shared that these achievements underscore the group's unwavering commitment to delivering diverse yet equally exceptional hospitality experiences.

“Whether through the timeless elegance of Taal Vista Hotel or the vibrant, nature-focused escape of Pico Sands Hotel, these accolades serve as vital milestones in a shared journey defined by innovation and heartfelt Filipino hospitality,” she added.

“These recognitions are a testament to the passion and dedication of our teams who continue to elevate the guest experience while staying true to the identity of each property,” said Ramon Makilan, general manager of Taal Vista Hotel. “For Taal Vista, it is especially meaningful as we continue to honor our heritage while evolving to meet the expectations of today’s travelers,” he added.

At Pico Sands Hotel, management said the awards reflect growing demand for nature-focused leisure destinations accessible from Manila.

“We are truly honored to be recognized on both the national and regional stage,” said Maxi Gavino, general manager of Pico Sands Hotel. “These awards inspire us to further enhance our offerings and create even more meaningful and memorable stays for our guests,” Gavino added.
