Tycoon Kevin Tan chasing tourists and MICE as next boom area

Alliance Global Group (AGI) CEO Kevin Tan believes the country’s tourism sector will experience significant growth in the coming years and is allocating substantial resources to capture a large share of the market.

In addition to expanding its hotel rooms to 12,000—a significant increase from 7,500 last year—the conglomerate plans to build more convention centers to seize opportunities in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.

“We are doing all this because we truly believe that the country’s tourism and leisure sector is an emerging bright spot for the Philippines,” Tan said during the company’s stockholders’ meeting on Thursday.

“We want to maintain our market leadership in this sector and be a key participant in its significant growth potential,” he added.

Their MICE portfolio includes the Marriott Grand Ballroom within the Newport World Resorts complex in Manila and the Boracay Newcoast Convention Center.

Soon, the company will open the P1.5-billion Mactan Expo Center in its Mactan Newtown township in Cebu.

“Further demonstrating the group’s strong commitment to the growing tourism and leisure sector, AGI is also investing in human capital by providing hospitality training courses through our academy of leisure and tourism to develop the next generation of world-class hospitality professionals,” Tan said.
