Is Albay the next wind frontier? Alternergy tests clean energy potential

Alternergy Holdings Corp., the clean power firm led by former Energy Secretary Vicente S. Perez Jr., is planting early seeds for its next wind power venture—this time in Albay, a province not yet known for large-scale renewable energy.

The company has deployed a LiDAR system, a solar-powered device that uses laser pulses to measure wind speed and direction at various heights, helping assess whether the site can support a wind farm.

“Our LiDAR system has started collecting wind measurement that will be instrumental in determining feasibility of the project. We are excited to explore the wind power potential of Albay Province and support the province’s sustainability goals,” said Knud Hedeager, president of Alternergy Wind Holdings Corp.

Early groundwork

The Department of Energy has already granted a Certificate of Authority for the Albay Wind Power Projects, giving Alternergy three years to finish pre-feasibility and permitting work.

If deemed commercially viable, the project will be converted into a 25-year Wind Energy Service Contract. This new front in Albay forms part of Alternergy’s push to hit 1 gigawatt of clean energy by 2030.

Solar-powered tech, data-driven decisions

Alternergy’s LiDAR system, powered by a solar setup will map wind patterns, while a traditional meteorological mast will be added by the fourth quarter to strengthen data collection during peak wind season.

“Our team is committed to ensuring that the Albay Wind Power Projects are executed with the utmost care for the environment and the local community,” Hedeager said.
