Insider Spotlight

  • Six McDonald’s stores shift to renewable energy
  • Partnership supports Green Energy Option Program rollout
  • Initiative aligns with 1,000-store expansion target

McDonald’s Philippines has partnered with Shell Energy Philippines to pilot renewable energy supply across select high-energy-demand stores, marking another step in the fast-food chain’s sustainability push as it expands nationwide.

In a company release, McDonald’s Philippines, operated by Golden Arches Development Corp., said the partnership falls under the government’s Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), which allows businesses to directly source electricity from renewable energy providers under the Renewable Energy Act of 2008.

The power switching took effect on March 26, 2026, while the companies formalized the partnership through a memorandum of agreement signed on April 23.

The big picture

The pilot program initially covers six McDonald’s stores with the highest energy demand within the Meralco franchise area. Shell Energy Philippines will provide renewable energy supply and energy management solutions aimed at improving operational reliability, cost efficiency, and long-term energy planning.

McDonald’s said additional eligible stores across the country have already been identified, creating a pathway for broader adoption of renewable power in the coming years.

The renewable energy initiative aligns with McDonald’s Philippines’ “Green & Good” sustainability platform as the company targets 1,000 stores by 2028.

Why it matters

Beyond reducing carbon emissions, the partnership is also expected to provide operational benefits for the restaurant chain, including access to Renewable Energy Certificates and more predictable electricity pricing across its multi-site operations.

“This commitment is brought to life through our Green & Good initiative, which guides how we reduce our environmental impact while continuing to serve millions of customers every day,” said Andre Villareal, vice president for supply chain management at McDonald’s Philippines.

“We look forward to working with Shell Energy Philippines not just as a supplier, but as a committed partner in protecting our planet and building a more sustainable future for generations to come.”

Shell Energy Philippines chief commercial officer Sarah Rose Lim said the collaboration demonstrates how businesses can adopt “practical, scalable energy solutions” that support both growth and sustainability goals.

“By enabling renewable energy across the initial pilot stores under the GEOP, we are helping McDonald’s Philippines take a meaningful step toward greener operations,” Lim said.
