Now, his son Raphael “Apa” Ongpin takes the reins, stepping in as the prestigious organization’s next executive director, succeeding Bobby Batungbacal, who will step down on Dec. 31, 2024, after nine and a half months in the role.
A member of the prominent Ongpin family, Apa brings his experience in media, television, and music to lead one of the country’s most influential business organizations.
Since 1981, MBC has championed economic and social advocacy, supporting the return of democracy in 1986 and leading efforts to strengthen institutions and liberalize key industries.
“We are truly grateful for Bobby’s contributions to MBC during the nine and a half months in his tenure,” Edgar Chua, MBC chair, announced to the organization’s members and partners.
“He initiated a number of new and successful programs like the Agriculture Summit, LGU Awards, and the MBC Golf Tournament. We wish him the very best as he embarks on the next chapter of his professional journey,” Chua added.
In a message to InsiderPH, Ongpin said it was an honor to be offered “this prestigious opportunity” by the group’s “powerhouse” board of directors whom he described as “titans of industry” whom he respected and admired.
“Working with such a legendary board will be a rare privilege,” he said.
Ongpin pointed out that he will be following in the “giant footsteps” of former MBC executive directors Bill Luz, Peter Perfecto, Coco Alcuaz, and the outgoing current executive director Bobby Batungbacal, “all of whom made the Makati Business Club what it is today.”
“I will be relying on them for advice and guidance,” he said, adding that he was looking forward to meeting the highly capable and professional MBC staffers who have carried out the group’s advocacies.
“Finally, the biggest footsteps I will have to follow are, of course, my father’s,” Ongpin said. “He was a co-founder of this organization 43 years ago, and I believe he somehow guided me to this opportunity. I hope to make him proud of me.”
