Canva is moving beyond its roots as a design platform as rising use of its documents, presentations and other workplace tools strengthens its bid for a bigger role in everyday productivity.

Why it matters

Canva is increasingly competing for work traditionally spread across separate productivity and collaboration tools. More than one billion designs are now created on the platform each month, while Canva Presentations alone has 100 million monthly users.

The Philippines has emerged as a particularly important market. The country ranks among Canva’s top three markets for Docs, Presentations and Sheets, with more than 72 percent of local users creating on mobile, according to a company release.

Nearly three in five presentations in the Philippines start on a mobile device, while Filipino users created more than 116 million presentations over the past year.

The latest upgrades add richer layouts and formatting controls to Docs, new data analysis and visualization capabilities to Sheets and faster collaboration features to Whiteboards.

Presentations gain tools including timing estimates and automatically generated presenter notes, while Websites get expanded navigation, SEO and domain controls.

Canva said nearly 1,000 documents and 3,000 presentations are created every minute. More than 98 percent of Fortune 500 companies use the platform, while enterprise adoption has more than doubled year on year.

“When we launched the Visual Suite, we were planting the seeds for a very different way of working, and a few years later those seeds have grown into a mighty forest,” Canva co-founder and chief product officer Cameron Adams said.

“We’re incredibly proud to see Canva becoming one of the most widely used productivity suites in the world, as people bring more of their everyday work into Canva. Today marks our 100th new feature launch this year alone, a pace of nearly one Visual Suite upgrade every other day. As we often say, we still feel like we’re only 1 percent of the way there, and we’re just getting started.”

The bigger picture

Canva is betting that businesses increasingly want fewer standalone tools, positioning Visual Suite as a place where projects can move from brainstorming and documents to data analysis and presentations without switching platforms. —Princess Daisy C. Ominga | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
