Operated by the Aboitiz Group and built by Megawide Construction Corp., MCIA is the country’s second-biggest air gateway, serving over 10 million passengers annually.
In a statement, airport operator Aboitiz GMCAC said it implemented projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
These include the use of green spaces and the use of technology like solar photovoltaic systems to reduce carbon emissions.
Athanasios Titonis, CEO of Aboitiz GMCAC, said the aviation sector is a major cause of air pollution, accounting for 2.5 percent of global carbon emissions.
“Being the second largest airport facility in the country, our role is crucial in minimizing our carbon footprint. We do this by setting operational boundaries that would directly impact the CO₂ levels of the airport,” he said in a statement.
MCIA is one of 12 exceptional airports in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions recognized for their groundbreaking sustainability efforts.
The award was presented during the ACI World Annual General Assembly, Conference, and Exhibition, held from May 21-23.
