Globe’s Valero Telepark earns DOE recognition for renewable energy use, AI-driven efficiency

Globe’s Valero Telepark has received a special award for innovative contribution from the Department of Energy (DOE) for its 100-percent renewable energy adoption and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize compressor energy management.

The recognition was given as part of the Energy Efficiency Excellence (EEE) Awards, which honors organizations that integrate energy efficiency into their operations.

The 2024 awards saw a record 562 entries across various industries, with only 18 entities earning distinction for outstanding achievements.

Globe’s green initiative

Valero Telepark, a critical hub for data equipment and technical offices, stood out for its energy conservation efforts, achieved through Globe’s strategic collaboration with US-based technology provider, Vertiv.

Upgrades at the facility include:

  • Precision Air Handling Units (PAHUs) with variable fan control to optimize airflow
  • External Digital Demand-Response Technologies (EED-RT) to improve cooling efficiency in piping systems
  • AI-driven energy management, reducing power consumption and achieving up to 20 percent in annual energy savings

Globe has also implemented Vertiv’s next-generation uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, which are:

✔ Three times longer-lasting than conventional units

✔ 50 percent  more space-efficient and 60 percent lighter, reducing construction costs

✔ Contributing to two data centers achieving a highly efficient 1.5 power usage effectiveness (PUE) factor.

"Globe’s partnership with Vertiv has been instrumental in improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our operations, and we are honored that the Department of Energy has recognized these efforts, with Valero Telepark serving as a showcase facility," said Raymond Aguilar, head of risk & property management at Globe.

Expanding energy-efficient solutions

Beyond Valero Telepark, Globe has integrated Vertiv rectifiers at several cell sites and base transceiver stations (BTS). These rectifiers adjust to demand, enter sleep mode to conserve energy, and are powered by lithium-ion batteries, replacing older, less efficient technologies.

Additionally, two of Globe’s data centers were constructed using Vertiv’s modular solutions, cutting construction time in half from 12 months to just six. The cold aisle containment solution and adaptive precision cooling systems further improve energy efficiency.

By integrating energy-efficient solutions in its infrastructure, Globe continues to pave the way for more sustainable operations.

“Sustainability is at the core of what we do, and through continuous investments in green technologies, we strive to reduce our environmental impact while ensuring reliable and efficient network operations," said Yoly Crisanto, chief sustainability and corporate communications officer at Globe. — Ed: Corrie S.
