Insider Spotlight

  • Customer trust: Metro Retail continues investing in service, transparency and responsible retailing across its Cebu network
  • Government recognition: Eleven Cebu stores later earned the Department of Trade and Industry's 2025 Bagwis Award for upholding consumer protection and fair trade
  • Higher standards: The retailer says operational excellence begins with frontline teams delivering consistent customer experiences

As retailers compete on price, convenience and digital innovation, Metro Retail Stores Group Inc. (MRSGI) is betting that long-term customer loyalty is built on something less visible but equally important—consumer trust.

That commitment recently earned national recognition after 11 Metro Retail stores in Cebu received the 2025 Bagwis Award from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), an honor given to establishments that consistently uphold consumer rights, fair trade practices, regulatory compliance and quality customer service. The awards were presented during the DTI's Bagwis Awarding Ceremony on June 19.

Beyond the checkout counter

The Bagwis Award recognizes retailers that create safe, reliable and customer-centric shopping environments, serving as a benchmark for businesses committed to responsible retailing.

Among the MRSGI outlets recognized were Metro Colon Supermarket and Department Store, Metro Ayala Supermarket and Department Store, Metro Canduman Supermarket, Metro Wholesale Mart Colon, Super Metro Colon, Super Metro Basak Mambaling, Metro IT Park, Metro Supermarket Banawa and Super Metro Toledo.

Putting customers first

"We are honored to receive this recognition from the DTI, as it affirms our commitment to putting customers at the heart of our operations,’’ MRSGI president and COO Joselito Orense said in a company statement. “This achievement reflects the dedication of our store teams, whose hard work and passion enable us to provide excellent service while upholding the highest standards of responsible retailing.”

Responsible retailing as strategy

As consumers become more discerning, retailers are increasingly expected to offer more than competitive prices. Transparency, ethical business practices and dependable service have become key drivers of customer confidence.

Metro Retail said these principles continue to guide its operations as it strengthens its presence in Cebu and other markets.

The company remains committed to building consumer trust through ethical business practices, operational excellence and continuous improvements across its supermarket and department store network.

For Metro Retail, the Bagwis Award is more than a recognition of compliance. It reflects a business philosophy that places customer welfare at the center of its operations—an approach the company believes will remain essential as the retail industry continues to evolve. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
