The award recognizes Maynilad’s application of OpenFlows WaterGEMS — a hydraulic modeling software — to optimize the delivery of "New Water," a highly purified wastewater treated to meet stringent drinking water standards.
This cutting-edge solution is now being implemented at Maynilad’s first new water facility in Parañaque City, which supplies 10 million liters per day (MLD) of potable reused water to Barangays San Dionisio and San Isidro.
Through advanced simulations, Maynilad engineers used the software to determine optimal pipe sizes, tank capacities, and pump configurations for efficient water distribution. The technology also enabled real-time network adjustments, improving water pressure stability, flow management, and accelerating project timelines.
“Leveraging digital technology in our 'New Water' initiative enhances operational efficiency and strengthens water security for our customers,” said Engr. Ronald Padua, Maynilad Vice President and Head of Water Supply Operations.
Maynilad began exploring potable reuse in 2019 as part of its long-term water sustainability program. In 2022, the utility established its first "New Water" treatment plant at the Parañaque Water Reclamation Facility, working closely with regulators and experts to ensure the safety and viability of reused water for public consumption.
