Airport operator New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), backed by conglomerate San Miguel Corp., expects passenger traffic from Oct. 27 to Nov. 4 to rise by 1 percent from 1.24 million a year earlier, with Oct. 30 shaping up as the busiest day at around 149,000 travelers.
Putting upgrades to the test
The rush comes after more than two years of airport modernization, including the installation of 78 automated immigration gates at Terminals 1 and 3 that can process eligible travelers in about 20 seconds, subject to immigration screening requirements.
Passengers will also encounter upgraded flight information displays, improved waiting areas and additional restaurants and lounges, although heavier crowds could still put pressure on check-in counters, baggage handling and terminal access.
All hands on deck
NNIC is deploying additional security personnel, traffic marshals and passenger assistance teams, while its 24-hour command center at Terminal 2 will coordinate responses to disruptions.
Immigration, customs and quarantine counters will be staffed according to demand, with additional screening personnel, police and K-9 patrols deployed during peak periods.
The operator is also coordinating with airlines on aircraft parking and unscheduled flights, while adjusting shuttle and taxi services to manage congestion outside the terminals.
Before heading to the airport
Travelers are advised to arrive at least three hours before international flights and two hours before domestic departures, while allowing extra time for road traffic and security checks.
Passengers should also confirm their flight status and terminal assignments, check in online when possible and prepare their travel documents before leaving home.
International passengers required to use eTravel must complete their free registration within 72 hours before arrival or departure through the official platform or eGovPH app.
