Bohol-Panglao International Airport (BPIA), the Philippines’ tenth-busiest gateway, has entered a new phase of development as Aboitiz InfraCapital Inc. begins reconfiguring key terminal areas to improve passenger experience and operational flow.

The move signals the start of a broader, phased enhancement program at the island’s main aviation hub, often branded as the country’s “Green Gateway To The World.”

Early works focus on preparing spaces for upgrades that will better match rising travel demand while maintaining day-to-day efficiency.

Why it matters

BPIA sits at the center of Bohol’s tourism engine, and improvements to passenger flow and terminal design are expected to ripple across airlines, local businesses, and the province’s investment appeal.

The airport’s role has only grown as Bohol strengthens its position as a UNESCO Global Geopark destination.

Aboitiz InfraCapital vice president and head of airports Rafael M. Aboitiz said, “This reconfiguration marks an important step in our continuing efforts to enhance the passenger journey at Bohol-Panglao International Airport.”

“We are grateful for the strong collaboration with our partners in the Bohol Provincial Government, the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), whose tremendous support enables us to pursue improvements that benefit travelers and the wider community,” Aboitiz said.

The big picture

The initiative follows regulatory approvals secured in March, covering layout plans, security measures, and additional equipment.

These developments, as detailed in a company release, position the airport for incremental yet sustained upgrades ahead of the first anniversary of Aboitiz InfraCapital’s operations takeover in June.

CAAP director-general ret. Lt. Gen. Raul Del Rosario underscored the broader aviation push, saying, “Enhancing Bohol-Panglao International Airport is part of a coordinated effort to strengthen the country’s aviation gateways. Through close collaboration with airport operators, these improvements in efficiency and facility design help ensure safer, smoother, and more responsive operations for passengers.”

What’s next

Local leaders are also eyeing expanded space for Boholano products inside the terminal, aligning airport development with provincial economic goals.

“Gateway sa atong probinsya ang Bohol Panglao International Airport, mao nga kuyog ang Aboitiz Group, nga maoy kasamtangang operator sa maong tugpahanan, magtinabangay kita nga mapalambo ug mapanindot pa kini. (The Bohol-Panglao International Airport is the gateway to our province, so together with the Aboitiz Group, which is the current operator of the airport, we will work together to develop and make it even more beautiful.),” said Governor Enrico Aristotle “Aris” C. Aumentado.
