Insider Spotlight
The monument now stands in an open area directly in front of the repositioned “Ninoy Aquino International Airport” lettering on the terminal facade, visually bringing together the airport’s name and the historical figure it commemorates.
Why it matters
The improved location makes the marker more visible to passengers and visitors moving through Terminal 1, while giving it a dedicated space within the airport’s ongoing redevelopment.
Its placement also creates a stronger historical focal point at the terminal frontage. Instead of standing separately from the airport name, the marker and the NAIA lettering now form part of the same arrival-side setting.
The monument features an outline of Aquino with one arm raised, mounted on a dark panel above a plaque describing the significance of the site and his assassination at the airport in 1983.
The bigger picture
The marker’s new setting comes as New NAIA Infra Corp. continues upgrading Terminal 1, including improvements to the arrivals curbside and facade.
The “Ninoy Aquino International Airport” lettering has been repositioned from the top edge of Terminal 1’s main curbside-facing facade to the frontage of the arrivals extension, where the wider and more open surroundings give the airport name greater visibility.
The covered arrivals area is also part of improvements designed to make passenger movement between the terminal and vehicles more convenient, particularly during inclement weather.
Second look
Members of the Aquino family visited the newly positioned marker on August 20, ahead of Ninoy Aquino Day.
NNIC President and CEO Ramon Ang welcomed the family and accompanied them to the revamped site, where a blessing was also held.
The National Historical Commission of the Philippines is leading the official Ninoy Aquino Day commemoration at NAIA on August 21, putting renewed attention on the historical significance of the airport and its namesake.
