Meralco has advised some of its industrial and commercial electricity consumers to be on standby to implement the Interruptible Load Program (ILP) after the Luzon grid was placed on yellow alert status today.

The ILP is a scheme where large clients of the country’s biggest electricity retailer voluntarily switch to other sources of power to temporarily unburden the power grid. In so doing, they prevent forced blackouts for wider parts of Meralco’s services areas.

This follows yesterday’s red alert status, during which Meralco avoided rotational power interruptions due to improved supply and collective de-loading of over 260 megawatts by commercial and industrial customers.

Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga said over 260 MW were saved on Wednesday, thanks to industrial and commercial users who participated in the ILP scheme.

Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga praised ILP participants for their role in maintaining uninterrupted electricity.

He also urged the public to practice energy conservation.

Meralco is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed, the company said.
