Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), through its energy arm Meralco Powergen Corp. (MGEN) and subsidiary PacificLight Power (PLP), will build Singapore’s largest hydrogen-ready 600-megawatt (MW) power plant, set to operate by 2029.

The landmark project, awarded by the Energy Market Authority, will feature an H-class Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) with an integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), the first of its kind in Singapore. It supports 30 percent hydrogen use initially, with future potential for 100 percent, aligning with decarbonization goals.

The plant expands PLP’s 830-MW operations and complements a 100-MW fast-start unit set to launch by mid-2025. The greenfield site allows for further upgrades, including carbon capture and a second turbine unit, reinforcing PLP’s energy leadership.

This project boosts PLP’s growth and solidifies its role in Singapore’s energy transition.

Management’s view

“PLP’s continuing strong performance in a very competitive power market has enabled us to move forward with this industry-leading project to bring additional clean power to Singapore,” said Meralco chair and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan.

“PLP’s ability to take on a meaningful project such as this cements its place among MGEN’s core holdings,” he added.

Addressing energy needs

“This landmark project exemplifies MGEN’s steadfast commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence,” said Emmanuel V. Rubio, president and CEO of MGEN.

“As we advance with this investment, we are not only addressing Singapore’s growing energy needs but also setting a new standard for integrating efficiency and environmental responsibility in power generation. Together with our partners, we are paving the way for a greener and more resilient energy future in the region,” he added.
