In a statement, the transmission service provider said the newly completed 500-kilovolt (kV) Mariveles-Hermosa-San Jose transmission line now serves as a crucial electricity corridor, enhancing total transfer capacity to 8,000 megawatts (MW) and supporting both existing and upcoming power generation in the Bataan and Zambales areas.
The new transmission facilities are expected to — subject to supply conditions and occasional forced outages — help reduce situations yellow and red alert situations that NGCP declares whenever electricity reserves are thin or insufficient.
Additionally, the 230-kV Cebu-Negros-Panay transmission backbone increases inter-island connectivity with 800 MW of submarine cable capacity and 2,400 MW overhead capacity in Cebu and Negros.
The Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection also strengthens the grid with 2,400 MW overhead capacity and enables power sharing between Mindanao and Visayas, up to 450 MW, expandable by another 450 MW.
In Mindanao, the NGCP has extended the 230-kV Mindanao transmission backbone, adding 2,200 MW capacity in the north and 2,400 MW in the south.
Ongoing projects like the 500-kV Tuy-Dasmarinas transmission line and the Cebu-Bohol interconnection facility will further enhance transmission capacity in their respective regions.
NGCP emphasized the importance of a whole-of-government approach to address the growing electricity demand and called for expedited project approvals from the Energy Regulatory Commission to continue enhancing the nation's power infrastructure.
