The country’s largest electricity retailer on Tuesday said it had secured commitments from two glass manufacturing firms to help ease the burden of the power grid during times of high demand.

In a statement, Meralco said that under the government’s Interruptible Load Program (ILP),  Pioneer Float Glass Manufacturing Inc. will contribute an additional 2 megawatts (MW) of de-loading capacity from its Pasig City plant.

During April's periods of “red alerts” when demand in the Luzon grid outstripped supply, the company voluntarily reduced its load by 1.5 MW without compensation, helping to avert power interruptions.

Anglo Watsons Glass Inc., meanwhile, which de-loaded 1.3 MW during a red alert period in May, plans to enroll fully, adding 2.3 MW from its Calamba, Laguna facility.

These efforts result from Meralco’s engagement with key industries, including the Glass Manufacturers Association of the Philippines Inc.

“These commitments reflect our shared dedication to alleviating strain on the power grid,” said Meralco buce president Ma. Cecilia M. Domingo.

The ILP asks large-load customers to reduce grid consumption to prevent household power outages during red alert periods.
