"We have secured commitments from big-load customers under Interruptible Load Program (ILP) participants to de-load more than 300 megawatts to help ease demand," Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga said.
Meralco is also prepared to implement manual load dropping or rotating power interruptions if necessary to manage the system effectively, the company added.
This proactive approach aims to stabilize the Luzon grid during the ongoing power shortage.
On Thursday morning, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines warned that the Luzon power grid would be on red alert status (when supply is insufficient) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Yellow alert status (when power reserves are thin) would prevail between 12 noon to 1 p.m., 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 12 midnight.
The grid operator said available capacity for the Luzon grid stands at 13,531 MW while peak demand for Thursday is projected to hit 13,597 MW.
