The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has declared a yellow alert status for the Luzon grid from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. today following the unplanned outage of the San Gabriel power plant, which tripped yesterday, July 17.

This downtime effectively removed 417.4 megawatts (MW) from the grid, the firm said in a message to the media.

Available capacity stands at 12,376 MW against a peak demand of 11,794 MW.

In addition to San Gabriel, multiple power plants have faced forced outages and derated capacities, contributing to a total of 1,893.5 MW unavailable to the grid.

This yellow alert status signifies that the operating margin is insufficient to meet the grid’s contingency requirements.

However, the Visayas and Mindanao grids remain in normal condition.

NGCP said it continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure stable power supply.
