Taiwan Fructose taps First Gen geothermal power in Batangas

Taiwan Fructose Co. Ltd., a global supplier of sweeteners, has partnered with First Gen Corp., the Philippines’ leading renewable energy provider, to power its production and logistics facility in Batangas with geothermal energy.

Agreement for clean power

The agreement, signed on Aug. 27, will allow First Gen to supply the Taiwanese firm’s facility inside the First Philippine Industrial Park (FPIP) with electricity from the Bacon-Manito (Bac-Man) geothermal complex in the Bicol region. The arrangement falls under the government’s Green Energy Option Program.

The Bac-Man geothermal complex is operated by Energy Development Corp.  (EDC), a First Gen subsidiary and the world’s largest vertically integrated geothermal company.

Supporting sustainability

Taiwan Fructose’s Batangas facility produces glucose and fructose syrups, sweetening additives, and other food and beverage ingredients primarily for the export market.

“Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source that can run at baseload capacity which is ideal for industries that require stable 24/7 power supply with a lower carbon footprint,” said First Gen chief customer engagement officer Carlo Vega.

“We are pleased to support Taiwan Fructose in its journey towards sustainability and decarbonization,” he added.

First Gen’s RE portfolio

Lopez-led First Gen operates 28 renewable energy plants across the country with a combined capacity of more than 1,600 megawatts from geothermal, wind, solar, and hydro sources.

The company, through a partnership with Prime Infrastructure Capital, also has a stake in four Batangas-based gas-fired power plants totaling 2,017 MW. This diversified portfolio underscores First Gen’s commitment to providing clean, stable, and secure energy for the Philippines. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
