Romulo law firm names corporate and tax law expert Buenaventura as new chair

Romulo Mabanta Buenaventura Sayoc & de los Angeles, one of the most prominent law firms in the Philippine business landscape, has appointed Jose “Chito” Buenaventura as its new chairman, effective Oct. 26, 2024.

Buenaventura, a veteran corporate and tax law expert with over 50 years of experience at the firm, emphasized the firm's commitment to integrity and professionalism.

"Through the years [Romulo Mabanta] has evolved and has produced some of the most brilliant legal practitioners in the country,” he said in a statement. “But it never abandoned its roots of ethics and probity."

Buenaventura further highlighted the firm’s legacy as it approaches its 125th anniversary in 2027.

Supporting Buenaventura in his leadership are five senior partners: Perry Pe, Cynthia del Castillo, Jose Salvador Mirasol, Louie Ogsimer, and Herminio Ozaeta Jr., ensuring a smooth transition and continued excellence in the firm’s operations.

Buenaventura is the brother of business leader Cesar Buenaventura and the late Rafael “Paeng” Buenaventura, former Governor of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

From chair to chair emeritus of the storied law firm

The previous chair, Ricardo Romulo, a key figure in the firm’s history, has been named chair emeritus. The leadership transition was finalized during the firm’s recent partnership meeting held in Vienna, Austria.

Founded in 1902 as Gibbs and McDonough, Romulo has evolved into a cornerstone of the Philippine legal landscape. Justice Roman Ozaeta, who joined in 1922, and his son, Herminio, added to the firm’s reputation, with significant contributions to the judiciary and legal profession.
