Former transportation secretary Jaime J. Bautista is joining the board of Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. as the copper producer moves deeper into the Sy family’s expanding mining strategy.
Atlas elected Bautista as an independent director effective Sept. 9, adding another high-profile corporate figure as its ownership structure undergoes a major shake-up.
Bautista served as transportation secretary from 2022 to 2025 and previously led Philippine Airlines as president and chief operating officer.
He also sits as an independent director of the Philippine Stock Exchange, San Miguel Corp., San Miguel Food and Beverage, Eagle Cement and Mit-Pacific Infrastructure Holdings.
Atlas ownership shifts
His appointment comes as Sy-Consunji-backed Dominion Holdings consolidates its grip on Atlas, acquiring a 20.43 percent stake ahead of a planned transfer of SM Investments’ separate 34 percent holding expected in 2027,
Combining the two holdings could eventually give Dominion majority control of Atlas, making the copper producer a cornerstone of the listed company’s transformation into a major mining vehicle.
The board appointment adds another change at Atlas as the Sy and Consunji families position Dominion to consolidate mining assets, with the massive Tampakan copper-gold project also set to join the fold.
