The SM Group’s China Banking Corp. (Chinabank) has recruited HSBC private banking chief Jonathan T. Cua to lead its wealth management group, adding outside firepower as the lender chases a bigger share of the country’s affluent market.

Cua joins as senior vice president and wealth management group head under Chinabank’s retail banking business segment effective Oct. 8.

The appointment places a banker with more than 27 years of experience at the center of the bank’s push to connect wealth products with its nationwide retail network.

Deep private banking bench

Cua most recently served as HSBC Global Private Banking’s Philippine desk head, where he spent the past three years managing relationships with wealthy Filipino clients.

Before joining HSBC in 2023, he spent more than 15 years at BDO Private Bank and earlier held roles at RBS in Hong Kong, Santander and Citibank Philippines.

His career has covered client management and wealth portfolios across the Philippines, Southeast Asia and Hong Kong.

Building around the new hire

Chinabank is integrating wealth management under retail banking to sharpen market segmentation, widen client coverage and make better use of its branch and customer network.

Cristina F. Gotuaco was named business head for the National Capital Region and Luzon wealth management center, while Karyn C. Lim will lead the group’s strategy and transformation division.

Irene C. Tanlimco will oversee the Metro Manila South and West hub, while Therese G. Escolin will lead the Makati business hub.

Wider management reshuffle

Jose Luis A. Alcuaz Jr. will head the customer experience and business process group, adding the customer contact center to his responsibilities.

Mani Thess Q. Peña-Lee will lead the expanded institutional and transaction advisory division, which is being reorganized into three departments.

Esmeralda R. Vicente was promoted to first vice president II while remaining head of the loans and discounts division.

Boardroom transition

The management changes also come as Gilbert U. Dee resigned as vice chair and executive director after 57 years on Chinabank’s board.

The lender named Dee chairman emeritus in recognition of his role in modernizing Chinabank and guiding its growth into a major universal bank.
