Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT) has taken a major step toward sustainability, now running exclusively on solar power during daylight hours.

MCT, a business unit of tycoon Enrique Razon Jr.'s, International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) at the Port of Cagayan de Oro, began sourcing solar energy on Feb. 14 under a retail supply agreement with PrimeRES Energy Corp.

During the day, the terminal operates fully on solar power, while at night, it draws electricity from PrimeRES’ supply portfolio, including the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), ensuring uninterrupted operations.

Green shift, cost benefits

This hybrid setup maximizes renewable energy use while maintaining reliability. ICTSI officials say the switch aligns with the company’s broader environmental goals and could lead to cost savings for MCT through competitive electricity rates.

PrimeRES, a licensed retail electricity supplier, specializes in renewable energy solutions and works with private distribution utilities and electric cooperatives.

The company sources electricity from Prime Infra’s renewable portfolio and third-party suppliers to deliver reliable, eco-friendly power.

Management’s view

“The Mindanao Container Terminal is a key gateway for the region, and reducing carbon emissions from our operations aligns with ICTSI’s broader environmental objectives,” says Aurelio C. Garcia, MCT president and general manager.

“This shift to solar power reflects our commitment to sustainability and demonstrates the steps we are taking to lower emissions,” he added.
