A meeting held on Feb. 20, led by DTI Region 6 Director Rachel Nufable and DENR Region 6 Assistant Director for technical services Edgardo Rostata, explored ways to enhance bamboo-based products and improve their marketability.
The DENR introduced the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO) Regional Non-Timber Forest Products Project, highlighting bamboo’s potential as a renewable resource for economic and environmental benefits.
AFoCO is a treaty-based intergovernmental organization that promotes sustainable forest management and helps mitigate climate change.
One major discussion point was sourcing bamboo raw materials, with Maasin, Iloilo identified as a key supplier.
To support the industry, DTI Region 6 pledged to enhance bamboo product quality, design, and innovation. Additionally, the agency plans to assist bamboo micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by facilitating their participation in trade fairs and marketing events.
"The bamboo industry holds great potential for economic growth and sustainability in Western Visayas. By working together with DENR, we can enhance the quality of our bamboo products, create new market opportunities, and support local MSMEs in reaching a wider audience," said Nufable.
Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to developing the bamboo sector, recognizing its role in job creation and sustainable development in the region. — Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
