Preserving history: Fort Santiago gets a makeover with German cleaning technology

Kärcher, a globally renowned German brand for cleaning technology, has teamed up with the Intramuros Administration (IA) to undertake a major restorative cleaning initiative at Fort Santiago, one of the most historic landmarks in the Philippines.

This project focuses on cleaning parts of the reconstructed main gate and the wall façades of Baluartillo de San Miguel and Medio Baluarte de San Francisco using state-of-the-art technology.

It forms part of Kärcher’s 90th-anniversary challenge, which aims to complete 90 cleaning projects worldwide in 2025, preserving historical and cultural sites for future generations.

“As we celebrate our long-standing passion for technical solutions that make a difference, Kärcher proudly recommits to preserving cultural heritage across the globe,” Darwin  Bañez, general manager of Kärcher Philippines, said in a statement.

“Having the esteemed Intramuros Administration as our partner is instrumental to this initiative’s success, enabling us to honor the memory of war victims and celebrate Filipinos’ heroic sacrifices,” said Bañez.

The IA, according to the statement, deployed trained personnel to assist in the restorative cleaning project, working alongside Kärcher experts who introduced advanced cleaning technologies to address environmental concerns, including organic growth on the fortress walls.

The process utilized hot water high-pressure cleaners in steam mode, applying only 0.5-1 bar of pressure at a temperature of 95°C. This method not only cleans the surfaces effectively but also prevents future biological growth by eliminating spores and seeds lodged in the stone’s pores.

A rich history, lasting commitment

Built in 1571 under Spanish navigator Miguel López de Legazpi, Fort Santiago has long served as a symbol of Filipino resilience and heritage. Today, it remains a national monument under the Intramuros Administration, which is responsible for preserving and restoring historic sites within the walled city of Manila.

Kärcher’s commitment to restorative cleaning extends beyond Fort Santiago. The company has worked on over 200 cleaning projects worldwide, including Philippine landmarks such as the San Agustin Church, the Rizal Monument, and San Sebastian Basilica.
