Insider Spotlight

  • Future-ready educators: 12 Manila schools trained in AI tools
  • Corporate partnership: Aboitiz Foundation, TELUS Digital, Google lead initiative
  • Why it matters: Teachers equipped to transform classrooms and communities

Public school teachers from 12 schools in Manila completed a three-day AI training led by Aboitiz Foundation, TELUS Digital Philippines, and Google for Education. The program, timed with National Teachers’ Month, aimed to prepare educators for the fast-changing digital landscape.

The rise of AI in education is no longer theoretical. From lesson planning to personalized tutoring, AI is changing how classrooms function. Equipping teachers with these tools ensures that public school students—often the most underserved—are not left behind in the digital transition.

“Guided by TELUS Digital’s ‘We give where we live’ philosophy, we are committed to supporting educators who shape tomorrow’s leaders. Teachers deserve strong partners as they navigate the digital transformation of education,” said Phoebe Carrera, CSR senior manager at TELUS Digital Asia Pacific.

Practical skills for teachers

The workshop, “Empowering Educators: Harnessing AI for Future-Ready Teaching,” included lectures, interactive sessions, and hands-on training. Teachers learned prompt engineering, AI solution-building, and practical classroom applications.

The program culminated in capstone projects where teachers showcased AI-driven solutions to improve lessons, streamline school operations, and enhance learning environments.

“When teachers are equipped with the right tools and knowledge, they can transform classrooms and uplift entire communities,” said Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar, Aboitiz Foundation president.

Strong partner support

The initiative drew backing from partners: Ronald McDonald House Charities provided meals, Converge ICT ensured reliable connectivity, and the Department of Education–Manila offered its full endorsement.

“AI is no longer science fiction — it is already shaping our classrooms, lesson planning, and student tools,” said Nerissa R. Lomeda, OIC, Schools Division Superintendent.

The bottom line

Now in its second year, the Empowering Educators program signals a growing movement: AI isn’t replacing teachers—it’s empowering them. For Filipino classrooms, this could mean bridging the digital divide and preparing the next generation for a future where tech skills are non-negotiable. – Ed: Princess Daisy C. Ominga
