Ang’s SMC teams up with Saavedra’s Megawide for major Boracay airport transformation

Billionaire Ramon S. Ang’s San Miguel Corp. has teamed up with Megawide Construction Corp. for its major expansion program at Caticlan Airport—better known as Boracay Airport, the primary gateway to the world-famous Boracay Island.

Megawide, led by tycoon Edgar Saavedra, is the country’s leading airport developer, renowned for its work on the expanded Mactan-Cebu International Airport and Clark International Airport.

It was tapped to design and construct a new passenger terminal building at the Caticlan Airport, which will begin next month.

“This will be another exciting opportunity for Megawide – to be able to work with one of the country’s largest and oldest conglomerates, San Miguel Corp. (SMC), and help realize its vision of a world-class facility at Caticlan Airport,” said Saavedra, the chair and CEO of Megawide.

“We hope to impart our engineering excellence and be able to integrate our sustainable methodologies to this landmark development,” he added.

SMC, one of the country’s largest conglomerates, is ramping up airport developments following its recent takeover of Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

It is also spearheading the development of the P740-billion airport city in Bulacan province, near Manila.

“Our search for a partner-contractor who shares our vision of modernizing airports in the country has concluded with our partnership with Megawide,” Ang, the chair and CEO of SMC, said in the same statement.

“We believe that Megawide’s track record of building key infrastructure through efficient and sustainable practices will help us deliver a world-class facility within our committed deadline,” he added.

7-million passenger capacity

During a business forum last September, Ang said a newer and larger passenger terminal was needed in Boracay.

“Next to that is to build a passenger terminal with a seven-million passenger capacity and eight boarding bridges for a more comfortable experience,” he said.

“It should be finished in less than three years,” Ang added.
