BPI expands digital inclusion, cyber defense with National ID push

Insider Spotlight

  • BPI integrated the National ID Authentication Services into its app to simplify digital account opening
  • The bank also convened more than 250 leaders at its CyberProtect Conference to strengthen collaboration against cyber threats
  • Both initiatives underscore BPI's 175th anniversary focus on digital trust, financial inclusion, and consumer protection

As Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) celebrates its 175th anniversary, the country's oldest bank is reinforcing its digital transformation strategy through initiatives aimed at expanding financial inclusion and strengthening cybersecurity.

The Ayala-led lender launched the integration of the National ID Authentication Services (NIDAS) into its mobile app to make digital account opening easier while also convening government agencies, regulators, law enforcement, industry leaders, academe, and consumers to address the growing threat of cybercrime.

The big picture

The rollout of the National ID eVerify integration was formalized through the signing of a subscription contract between BPI and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), allowing the bank to adopt the National ID Authentication Services to streamline customer onboarding while supporting the government's digital transformation and financial inclusion agenda.

"At BPI, we believe that financial inclusion begins with access. And access should be simple, seamless, and built on trust. That is why we are proud to partner with the PSA to integrate PhilSys into the account-opening journey through the BPI app," BPI president and CEO TG Limcaoco said.

Through the integration, individuals with a National ID (PhilID) record no longer need to upload a photo of their physical identification card when opening an account through the BPI app. Instead, users can verify their identity by taking a selfie, which is securely authenticated against the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys), making the process faster, more seamless, and more convenient.

Why it matters

Alongside efforts to simplify access to banking services, BPI is also intensifying initiatives to safeguard customers as digital transactions continue to grow.

At the CyberProtect Conference themed "Defend as One: Building a United Front Towards Consumer Protection," held on July 30 at Fairmont Makati, BPI gathered more than 250 participants from government, law enforcement, the banking sector, the private sector, academe, students, and senior citizens to promote stronger cooperation against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

The conference, which coincided with the bank's 175th anniversary celebration, expanded its reach through a dedicated CyberAcademy session for law enforcement and specialized discussions on scam awareness, fraud prevention, cybercrime investigation, data privacy, and consumer protection.

"Strong institutions continuously invest in systems and safeguards. Informed consumers serve as the first line of defense. Active collaboration brings together government, regulators, law enforcement, industry, and communities to address threats that no organization can solve alone. That belief has guided CyberProtect from the very beginning," Limcaoco said.

"Cybersecurity today is not simply an IT issue. It is a consumer issue, a business issue, and increasingly, a national issue. Our response must be just as interconnected as the risks we face," Limcaoco added.

By the numbers

The conference featured speakers from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the Department of Information and Communications Technology, the National Privacy Commission, and other stakeholders focused on strengthening national cybersecurity and consumer protection.

Attendance has steadily increased since the conference was launched, growing from 183 participants in 2023 to 215 in 2024 and reaching a record 250 attendees in 2025, reflecting rising awareness of digital fraud risks and the importance of coordinated action. —Ramon C.
