The airline is increasing flight frequency from four to seven weekly services while partnering with the Pingtung County Government to introduce Filipino travelers to lesser-known destinations beyond Taiwan’s major cities.
Why it matters
The expansion gives Filipino tourists more flexibility to explore Pingtung, Taiwan’s southernmost county, located approximately 25 minutes by car from Kaohsiung International Airport.
“With more Filipinos showing strong interest in traveling abroad, Taiwan remains our top route. We’re proud to work closely with the Pingtung County Government to uncover new destinations and give our travelers even more options, especially this time as everyone is planning their holiday trips and a lot are keen on finding new places to visit.” AirAsia Philippines president and general manager Anna Victoria Lu said in a statement.
The initiative also targets repeat visitors seeking fresh cultural and outdoor experiences, according to a company release issued Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Beyond the usual attractions
Pingtung offers Indigenous cultural experiences, scenic coastlines, marine adventures and natural hot springs, providing an alternative to Taiwan’s popular urban attractions.
“Pingtung has a very diverse group of people, so you can experience many different kinds of culture beyond night markets. For Filipino travelers, Pingtung offers a chance to discover another side of Taiwan, from vibrant Indigenous traditions and scenic coastlines to farm activities, ocean adventures, and natural hot springs, showcasing the island’s rich culture and natural beauty beyond its cities.” Pingtung County Government Transportation and Tourism Department Vice Director Jui-yu Chang said.
What travelers can explore
Key attractions include the 262-meter Shanchuan Glass Suspension Bridge, traditional glass bead-making workshops, Japanese-style heritage neighborhoods and the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium’s overnight experiences.
Visitors can also explore Eluanbi Lighthouse, overlooking waters near the Philippines’ Batanes islands.
The bigger picture
