The move underscores the carrier's strategy of matching capacity with seasonal demand while supporting tourism, business travel and cargo flows.
Starting in late October, the flag carrier will increase frequencies on three Japan routes, lifting Manila–Tokyo (Narita) and Manila–Osaka (Kansai) services from 14 to 21 weekly flights between Oct. 25, and March 27, 2027. Manila–Sapporo (Chitose) will rise from three to five weekly flights from Nov. 24, to Feb. 27, 2027.
The additional services will raise PAL's Japan operations to as many as 87 weekly flights during the winter season.
Why it matters
The expanded schedule comes as Japan remains one of the busiest overseas destinations for Filipino travelers during the winter months, while the Philippines continues to attract Japanese tourists escaping colder weather. Increased frequencies also provide additional cargo capacity between the two countries.
"The winter season is one of the most popular times of the year for Filipinos visiting Japan, while it is also a peak period for Japanese travelers seeking the Philippines' tropical destinations," Philippine Airlines president Richard Nuttall said in a press statement.
"By adding more flights, we are giving our customers greater flexibility during these high-demand months while strengthening tourism, business and cultural exchanges between our two countries. The additional services also provide more cargo capacity to support growing trade between the Philippines and Japan," he added.
The other side
PAL is also adding seasonal capacity to Australia during the Christmas and New Year travel period. The airline will operate additional Melbourne and Perth flights on selected peak dates while deploying larger aircraft on selected Sydney and Brisbane services to increase available seats.
The carrier said the Australia adjustments are intended to serve Filipino communities, holiday travelers and passengers visiting friends and relatives during the year-end rush. The expanded services also complement PAL's frequent flyer partnership with Qantas, allowing customers to redeem rewards across both airlines. —Vanessa Hidalgo|Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
