The approach earned recognition at the 2026 Golden Arrow Awards, where Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV) and UnionBank received four Golden Arrows each, while AboitizPower secured three from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
Why it matters
Sustainability increasingly shapes how businesses create employment, manage resources, and deliver services that support communities.
Industrial developments including LIMA Estate in Batangas and West Cebu Estate in Cebu collectively support around 100,000 jobs nationwide, according to an October 28 company release.
Driving growth
AboitizPower has added 846 megawatts of renewable energy capacity over four years through Aboitiz Renewables, including investments in solar generation.
Its Calatrava Solar Power Plant in Negros Occidental is the Visayas' largest operating solar facility.
Meanwhile, Mactan-Cebu, Bohol-Panglao, and Laguindingan airports handled 16.12 million passengers in 2025, supporting tourism and commerce.
Beyond infrastructure
The group is advancing circular economy initiatives through plastic bottle recycling, water reuse, and alternative fuels.
Its Apo Agua facility in Davao City uses hydropower in operations supporting treated water distribution to more than one million residents.
What they're saying
Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar, AEV chief reputation and sustainability officer, emphasized accountability as central to the group's strategy.
“For us, sustainability is about taking responsibility and being accountable for how we do business and the impact we have on people, communities, and the environment. It means making thoughtful decisions, using resources responsibly, and ensuring that our growth creates lasting value,” she said.
The bigger picture
Through its foundation, Aboitiz aims to equip 300 underserved schools with solar power and digital learning tools under AuroraPH.
Its CarbonPH initiative targets approximately 71,000 hectares of forest restoration and 10 million trees over 40 years.
Bottom line
As World Sustainability Day highlights environmental responsibility, Aboitiz is positioning governance-led sustainability as a practical driver of economic opportunity, community development, and long-term business resilience. —Princess Daisy C. Ominga | Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
