Acer bets on compact, dual-use devices to widen mobile gaming

Acer is betting that the next phase of handheld gaming will hinge not only on performance, but also on portability and versatility, as PC makers look for ways to differentiate their devices in an increasingly crowded mobile gaming category.

Gaming and productivity

Acer unveiled the Predator Atlas 7 at its next@acer global press conference in Berlin, expanding its handheld lineup with a smaller sibling to the 8-inch Predator Atlas 8 introduced at Computex 2026. It also showcased Project DualPlay Mini, a concept designed to switch between gaming and productivity.

The Atlas 7 is aimed at mobile-first gamers seeking flagship-level capabilities in a more compact package. It runs on up to an Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor with Intel Arc B390 graphics, alongside up to 24 GB of LPDDR5x memory and 1 TB of PCIe Gen4 NVMe storage.

Under the hood

Acer is pairing that hardware with a dual-fan cooling system featuring an 89-blade metal Predator AeroBlade fan and a secondary plastic fan. Vortex Flow tuning directs hot air from the chassis, while battery options reach 80 Wh.

The handheld carries a 7-inch FHD touchscreen with a 120 Hz refresh rate, 500-nit peak brightness and Variable Refresh Rate support. Connectivity includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 and UHS-II microSD support.

Beyond gaming

Project DualPlay Mini shows Acer exploring a device category extending beyond dedicated handheld gaming. The 8-inch concept uses a flip-and-swivel design to alternate between handheld and mini-laptop configurations, including a physical keyboard for gaming and productivity.

The Predator Atlas 7 is scheduled to reach North America in the fourth quarter of 2026 and Europe, Middle East and Africa in November. Acer did not provide pricing, while Project DualPlay Mini remains a concept with no commercial availability announced. —Vanessa Hidalgo| Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
