Insider Spotlight
The hype began on April Fool’s Day this year when Asus released a promotional video teasing a mysterious handheld device, fueling speculation of an Xbox-branded console.
“With ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, we are combining the best of AMD’s silicon, Asus’ design expertise and Xbox’s gaming ecosystem,” says Jack Huynh, senior vice president and general manager of AMD’s computing and graphics group.
Why it matters
The ROG Xbox Ally series brings PC and Xbox gaming into one device, powered by AMD’s new Ryzen Z2 A and Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processors. With 60Wh and 80Wh batteries respectively, the Ally and Ally X deliver extended playtime without compromising performance.
Roanne Sones, CVP at Xbox, says: “We wanted to create an authentic Xbox experience in a handheld form factor.”
Design and performance upgrades
The devices feature a redesigned Xbox-inspired grip, improved palm rest, and enhanced texturing for better control. Xbox impulse triggers bring advanced haptic feedback, while ROG intelligent cooling keeps the console comfortable during marathon sessions.
Players are welcomed by a full-screen Xbox interface on a 7-inch FHD display running Windows 11, optimized for joystick navigation and fast game access.
AI and ecosystem edge
The Ally X includes a built-in NPU, enabling features like automatic super resolution and AI-generated highlight reels. Xbox’s new handheld compatibility program and shader delivery system further optimize gameplay for speed and battery life.
