This follows a P12.75-billion concession deal signed at Malacañang on Oct. 28, 2024, with Aboitiz InfraCapital (AIC) committing to a 30-year modernization and development plan, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
This is the Aboitiz family conglomerate’s second airport project after the Mactan Cebu International Airport in Cebu.
“We see potential in international flights and want to work closely with the airlines in realizing this dream,” said AIC vice president and head of airports business Rafael M. Aboitiz.
“We will also work closely with our tourism stakeholders to see how we can further market the offerings of Misamis Oriental and develop a longer-term roadmap. Further, we want to foster a collaborative and conducive environment for investors,” he added.
Capacity upgrades
According to AIC, planned upgrades include expanding the passenger terminal, installing modern equipment, and enhancing airside and landside facilities.
“These improvements aim to significantly enhance passenger experience, boost operational efficiency, and elevate safety and security standards at the airport,” the company said.
The expansion of Laguindingan International Airport will occur in two phases, with an initial boost in capacity from 1.6 million to 3.9 million passengers annually in the first phase. The second phase could further increase capacity to 6.3 million passengers, adjusting based on future traffic needs.
Fueling growth for Mindanao
“Laguindingan International Airport is a pivotal milestone in our strategic mission to elevate the country’s aviation infrastructure. It underscores Aboitiz InfraCapital’s commitment to providing a seamless and efficient passenger experience, and more importantly, driving economic growth in Northern Mindanao by boosting connectivity and tourism,” Cosette V. Canilao, AIC president and CEO, said in the statement.
“Laguindingan is the gateway to Northern Mindanao, and an improved airport will mean a broader business base for Laguindingan and Misamis Oriental. We are more than ready to take Laguindingan International Airport to new heights,” she added.
Unsolicited PPP project
Laguindingan International Airport is the sixth-busiest in the Philippines and Mindanao’s second after Davao’s Francisco Bangoy International Airport.
It is also the first successful airport public-private partnership project awarded via unsolicited bid under the current administration.
