The government wants to overcome budget constraints and speed up airport upgrades through the use of the Public Private Partnership scheme, said Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) deputy director Danjun Lucas.
In a statement, Lucas said the PPP scheme can addresses funding and procurement challenges, allowing for the timely implementation of needed improvements.
"When the private sector gets involved, they contribute significant capital investment that help improve the airports," he said.
Apart from upgrading facilities, he said PPPs introduce technology, helping better streamline operations.
CAAP director general Capt. Manuel Antonio Tamayo earlier said the agency is pushing for airport privatization to concentrate on its regulatory functions.
CAAP operates nearly all of the 88 airports in the Philippines.
Tamayo said they are preparing the competitive bid process for the Laguindingan Airport serving Cagayan de Oro. This is an unsolicited PPP protect that was proposed by the Aboitiz Group.
