Lufthansa Technik Philippines, the aircraft maintenance venture backed by taipan Lucio Tan’s MacroAsia Corp. and Germany’s Lufthansa Technik, is expanding in the Philippines as global demand for aircraft maintenance continues to outpace available capacity.

The company said it plans to build a new base maintenance facility at Clark International Airport, adding a second major hub alongside its long-established operations at NAIA.

The announcement was made during the state visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who met with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., with both leaders welcoming the project as a milestone in Philippine-German economic cooperation, MacroAsia said on Tuesday.

Clark adds capacity

Once fully completed, the Clark facility will cover about 157,000 square meters and accommodate up to nine widebody aircraft bays, with initial operations targeted in 2028.

MacroAsia said the facility would complement Lufthansa Technik Philippines’ existing operations at NAIA and “help establish the Philippines as a stronger widebody aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) hub in the Asia-Pacific region.”

The announcement comes weeks after Lufthansa Technik Philippines secured a new long-term lease for its 22.6-hectare NAIA facility following months of negotiations after its previous 25-year lease expired in 2025.

Together, the Clark and NAIA facilities would significantly expand the company’s footprint as airlines worldwide grapple with maintenance bottlenecks, aging fleets and aircraft delivery delays.
