United upgrades intra-Asia flights from PH with 737 MAX 8 jets

United is gearing up to transform travel across its intra-Asia network, replacing its Guam-based Boeing 737-800 fleet with the state-of-the-art Boeing 737 MAX 8.

United is currently the only U.S. airline flying intra-Asia, operating daily services from Manila to Guam, twice-weekly services from Manila to Palau, and a daily service from Cebu to Tokyo-Narita. These routes, primarily served by United’s Guam-based aircraft, provide convenient onward connections to the mainland U.S.

The first 737 MAX 8 is scheduled to arrive in Guam by February 2026, ushering in a new standard of comfort and connectivity for regional travelers.

Modern onboard experience

The 737 MAX 8 will feature United’s signature interior, offering seatback entertainment in every seat, larger overhead bins to accommodate every passenger’s carry-on, and a bright, modern cabin design with LED lighting.

In a statement,  Kenichi Kiriyama, United Airlines’ director of sales – Asia, Micronesia, said the investments reflect United’s commitment to elevating customer experience in the Pacific region.

“Our investment in new aircraft to service our intra-Asia routes will deliver the premium experience our customers expect of United and is part of our broader commitment to elevating the customer experience for our customers in the broader Pacific region,” Kiriyama said.

Cabin and connectivity upgrades

United’s 737 MAX 8 aircraft will be configured with up to 166 seats, including up to 16 in United First. Every seat will be equipped with USB charging ports, while the seatback system will feature accessibility options for passengers with hearing or visual disabilities.

The airline also plans to roll out Starlink Wi-Fi across its entire fleet in the coming years, offering free internet access for MileagePlus members.

Inflight entertainment will include 13-inch HD screens in first class and 10-inch HD screens in economy, with free access to over 1,400 on-demand selections.

United has also partnered with Apple TV+ to feature full seasons of global hits and Spotify to  bring more than 450 hours of audiobook and video podcast content to passengers at no cost.

Commitment to the Philippines

It remains the only U.S. carrier offering nonstop flights between the Philippines and the United States, with 30 weekly services, including daily Manila–San Francisco flights that will increase to twice-daily starting Oct. 26. —Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
