AstraZeneca Philippines and AC Health signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen clinical trial capabilities across AC Health’s Healthway Medical Network, combining the drugmaker’s scientific expertise with an integrated hospital network spanning Metro Manila, Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.
Clinical trial readiness
Clinical trials have traditionally been concentrated in established research centers. Increasing the number and geographic reach of qualified institutions could bring research opportunities closer to patients, diversify participation and improve referral pathways.
The partnership will assess hospitals and healthcare facilities for clinical trial readiness while developing research systems, processes and competencies. Investigators and clinical teams will also receive training aimed at meeting recognized quality and Good Clinical Practice standards.
PH as No. 1 trial collaborator
AstraZeneca describes itself as the Philippines’ number one clinical trial collaborator, with more than 30 ongoing studies and over P3 billion invested in local clinical research during the past six years. Its studies cover oncology, respiratory and immunology, and cardiovascular, renal and metabolic diseases.
Greater access to research, treatments
“Our partnership is grounded in a simple belief: our patients should have greater access to high-quality clinical research and innovative treatments,” AstraZeneca Philippines country president Lotis Ramin said in a press statement.
“By bringing safe, high-quality clinical trials closer to Filipino communities, AstraZeneca's partnership with AC Health can expand patient access, strengthen local research, and improve standards of care,” she added.
New tech programs
Healthway will evaluate participating institutions’ infrastructure, capabilities and readiness and identify potential sites. AstraZeneca will provide trial opportunities, technical expertise and training and support site readiness and accreditation.
“Beyond introducing new technologies and programs, we are building the capabilities that will allow our hospitals and physicians to participate directly in clinical research and contribute to our vision of transforming health for every Filipino,” AC Health chief strategy and investment officer RJ Recio said.
