Why it matters

For Filipino households, a major illness can create financial challenges beyond hospitalization, including lost income, rehabilitation, and continuing treatment expenses. Such costs can quickly strain family budgets, particularly for households with limited emergency savings.

Vital 3 seeks to provide a financial cushion against these risks, according to a company release issued by BDO Insure. The plan is available to individuals aged 18 to 65, with premiums varying according to age and the selected coverage amount.

Beyond medical bills

Apart from its core critical illness protection, Vital 3 provides additional support for eligible cancer-related surgical procedures and dietary and nutritional therapy. These benefits are designed to address certain recovery needs that may continue after initial treatment.

The offering comes as heart disease, cancer, and stroke remain major health threats in the Philippines, highlighting the importance of preparing financially for potentially life-changing diagnoses.

By the numbers

Philippine Statistics Authority figures cited by BDO Insure show that ischaemic heart disease, which can lead to heart attacks, accounted for nearly 20 percent of deaths in 2025. Cancer represented 11.4 percent, while cerebrovascular diseases, including stroke, accounted for 9.9 percent.

These figures underscore the potential financial exposure of Filipino families facing serious illnesses, particularly when treatment and recovery disrupt household income.

The bigger picture

For budget-conscious Filipinos, Vital 3 offers an accessible entry point into critical illness protection, particularly for households seeking financial security without committing to expensive annual premiums.

However, the P1 million maximum benefit depends on the selected coverage, while claims remain subject to policy terms, conditions, and exclusions. Filipinos considering the plan should review the coverage details to understand the benefits and limitations before purchasing.
