The agreement marks a significant step in fostering technical cooperation between the two energy giants. Under the MOU, Meralco and Kepco will work together to explore emerging energy technologies, including:

  • Nuclear energy

  • Renewable energy solutions

  • Smart grids and microgrids

  • Energy storage systems

  • Electric vehicles and charging infrastructure

  • Advanced metering infrastructure

  • Smart substations and distribution automation

Also, the partnership will facilitate technical competency development through employee exchange programs and specialized training courses.

The two companies will likewise collaborate on advisory and consulting services to enhance the Philippine energy sector’s long-term sustainability and efficiency.

Smarter, more resilient energy future

Pangilinan, chair and CEO of Meralco, emphasized the significance of the strengthened partnership, stating:

"This memorandum of understanding marks an important step for both Kepco and Meralco. Enshrined here is a commitment to exchange knowledge, strengthen capabilities, and work together toward a smarter, more resilient energy future."

Pangilinan added that the collaboration will enable Meralco to refine strategies, integrate new technologies, and explore innovative ways to enhance the country’s power infrastructure.

"Beyond the business objectives, we want to forge and strengthen relationships that will drive meaningful progress," he said.

Building on previous collaborations

This latest MOU builds on Meralco and Kepco’s existing partnership, including the Knowledge Data Network (KDN) agreement signed in November 2023 to advance smart metering technologies.

With a customer base of over eight million in the Philippines, Meralco remains committed to strengthening its electricity distribution system, expanding renewable energy adoption, and ensuring long-term energy security.

Through collaborations with industry leaders like KEPCO, Meralco is taking proactive steps to drive investment in next-generation power solutions and support the country’s transition toward a more sustainable and technology-driven energy landscape.

Looking ahead

As the Philippines faces growing energy demands, Meralco’s partnership with Kepco  is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s energy future.

By leveraging global expertise and cutting-edge innovations, the two companies are well-positioned to enhance energy efficiency, reliability, and sustainability in the years to come. — Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
