The partnership will bring in cutting-edge technology to streamline airport operations, aligning NAIA with international aviation standards, the San Miguel Corp.-led consortium said in a statement on Thursday, Mar. 6, 2025.
The project will begin in May 2025 and is expected to be completed by September 2025.
According to the statement, Collins Aerospace will lead a comprehensive systems overhaul, introducing a Common Use Passenger Processing System and Common Use Self-Service kiosks that will allow passengers to check in and drop off luggage more efficiently.
Biometric screening will replace multiple document checks, reducing wait times while improving security. Passengers will also benefit from real-time flight updates via an upgraded Flight Information Display System and an improved NAIA website.
Security will be reinforced through pre-security e-gates and passenger flow management systems that will optimize foot traffic and reduce bottlenecks.
“For years, millions of Filipinos and international travelers have endured congestion, long queues, and outdated systems at NAIA. This modernization is long overdue, and we are committed to transforming NAIA into a world-class gateway that meets the expectations of modern travelers,” said Ramon Ang, president of NNIC.
“With these advancements, NAIA will be one of the most modern and efficient airports in the region,” he added.
The modernization will also enhance NAIA’s operational efficiency.
A new Airport Operational Database and Resource Management System will improve staff deployment and resource allocation, while a Baggage Reconciliation System will minimize lost luggage incidents by providing real-time tracking.
Advanced flight tracking and predictive analytics will help optimize runway planning and improve arrival time estimates. Additionally, an automated airline billing system will streamline financial transactions related to landing, takeoff, and other airport fees.
Project implementation will take place in phases. By May 2025, Collins Aerospace will deploy an on-site support team at NAIA. By August, core systems for passenger processing, baggage tracking, and resource management will go live.
The final phase, set for completion in September, will introduce self-service check-in kiosks, pre-security e-gates, self-bag drop stations, and biometric boarding gates.
Since assuming control of NAIA operations on Sept. 14, 2024, NNIC has prioritized infrastructure improvements and operational streamlining. The partnership with Collins Aerospace builds on these efforts, preparing NAIA to accommodate growing passenger volumes.
