Here's another intriguing twist in what is set to be the biggest initial public offering (IPO) in Philippine history.

Multiple company sources say verified GCash users will be able to subscribe directly to the upcoming GCash initial public offering through the GCash app itself, allowing millions of Filipinos to buy shares in the electronic wallet they use almost every day.

If finalized, the feature would represent the next chapter in GCash's financial inclusion story.

The first chapter was giving tens of millions of Filipinos access to digital financial accounts. The next, insiders say, is turning ordinary account holders into investors through GStocks PH, the app's stock investment platform.

The numbers are potentially staggering. Sources say as many as 49 million verified GCash users could become eligible to participate in the IPO, provided they have completed the company's know-your-customer (KYC) requirements, including identity verification and the submission of government-issued IDs. For most active users, that process has already been completed as part of using the platform's broader suite of financial services.

Just as important, the expected entry price appears designed to make share ownership accessible to ordinary Filipinos.

People familiar with the offering say the minimum subscription will likely be 100 shares. At the expected IPO price range of around P7 to P8 per share, that translates to an initial investment of only P700 to P800—small enough to bring equity investing within reach of millions who have never owned stocks before.

That affordability is deliberate because they want to dispel one of the biggest overhangs on the IPO: that P10 per share is too expensive for investors.

Indeed, while regulators approved a maximum offer price of P10 per share, company officials have privately indicated they have no intention of pricing the IPO at the ceiling.

The thinking, according to people familiar with the discussions, is that the final price should strike a balance: allowing long-time private equity investors to realize attractive returns while leaving meaningful upside for new public investors buying into the IPO.

Such an approach would also improve the chances of a successful aftermarket performance—something every high-profile listing hopes to achieve.

For GCash, the bigger prize may be even more significant. If millions of Filipinos who already use the app for payments, savings and transfers also become shareholders through the same platform, the IPO could mark an important milestone in the country's capital markets: moving financial inclusion beyond digital banking and into widespread retail investing.

Owning a piece of GCash, it appears, may soon be just a few taps away. Will it work? We’ll know in a few weeks.
