Since taking the helm at the county’s No. 2 lender at the height of the global pandemic in 2021, Limcaoco steered BPI through four consecutive years of record profits.
He also oversaw a sweeping digital overhaul and expanded its reach through the acquisition of Gokongwei-led Robinsons Bank.
A Stanford-trained mathematician and former Silicon Valley programmer, Limcaoco brought a valuable mix of technology, investment banking and corporate finance experience to BPI, which celebrates its 175th anniversary this year.
His Ayala career also has a colorful twist: he left the group twice for international banking jobs before returning in the late 1990s.
As revealed in a feature by the Philippine Daily Inquirer a few months after he became BPI CEO, he then was told leaders, including Fernando Zobel de Ayala, that it would be the last time they would take him back.
Limcaoco decided to stay with the group, rising to become Ayala Corp.'s finance chief before eventually landing his dream job running BPI.
Beyond his banking credentials, he also earned recognition for his leadership and communication skills, winning the Executive Leader category at the 2023 IABC Asia Pacific Communicator of the Year Awards.
Of course, BPI has a deep bench of executives and a long-established culture within the Ayala group for the sitting CEO to groom future leaders years before a change becomes necessary.
We’re told one name worth watching is Maria Cristina “Ginbee” Go, who oversees BPI's vast consumer banking business and happens to be a decade younger than Limcaoco.
And if that’s so, she would also become the first ever female CEO of BPI.
Go was named Retail Banker of the Year at the 2025 World Financial Innovation Series Philippines. She also holds a master’s degree with honors from Harvard Business School.
What’s next for Limcaoco remains up in the air, but if we had to guess, retirement is probably the last thing on the mind of a banker with a long track record of reinventing himself.
