NDC says Roque’s Manila Golf access supports official meetings

The National Development Co. said its Manila Golf and Country Club membership could help Trade Secretary Cristina Roque carry out official duties and meet business leaders and investors.

“The designation facilitates the performance of official functions and may provide a venue for meetings and engagements with business leaders, investors, and other stakeholders in furtherance of NDC’s mandate and institutional objectives,” the state investment company said in a statement to InsiderPH

The clarification confirms that Roque was named NDC’s corporate nominee to use the membership.

Some Manila Golf members were considering opposing Roque’s nomination after learning how she was seeking access to the club.

NDC said it has owned the Manila Golf share since 1994 after receiving it as part of a corporate transaction.

It described the arrangement as established practice, with its chair—who is also the sitting DTI secretary—serving as the designated nominee, a role it said previous trade chiefs had also held.

The further stressed that the share and membership remain NDC property regardless of the nominee.

It added that their use is subject to government rules, NDC policies and Commission on Audit requirements.
