Cebu Pacific rents out A320neo, crew to Vietnam Airlines for busy travel season

Insider Spotlight

  • Cebu Pacific will deploy an Airbus A320neo under a wet lease agreement with Vietnam Airlines through early September.
  • The partnership diversifies revenue by providing operational support to another Southeast Asian carrier during the Philippines' lean travel period.
  • The aircraft will operate domestic routes in Vietnam with Cebu Pacific's own pilots and cabin crew.

Cebu Pacific has signed a wet lease agreement with Vietnam Airlines, allowing the Philippine carrier to deploy one Airbus A320neo aircraft to support the Vietnamese flag carrier's domestic operations during the peak travel season.

The agreement covers the use of one Airbus A320neo powered by Pratt & Whitney engines from July 15 to Sept. 7, 2026. The aircraft will be based in Ho Chi Minh City and operated by Cebu Pacific's pilots and cabin crew on domestic routes serving Cam Ranh, Phu Quoc, Vinh, Da Nang, and return flights.

The big picture

The partnership reflects growing collaboration among Southeast Asian airlines as regional travel demand continues to recover and airlines seek flexible ways to match aircraft capacity with seasonal demand.

"Vietnam and the broader Southeast Asian market continue to see strong growth in air travel, creating opportunities for airlines to collaborate more closely in meeting demand," Cebu Pacific chief financial officer Mark Cezar said.

"As Cebu Pacific’s fleet continues to expand, we are well positioned to deploy our capacity where it is needed most, including through strategic wet lease partnerships during periods of lower demand in the Philippines," Cezar added.

Why it matters

The arrangement enables Cebu Pacific to generate additional revenue beyond its core passenger business while maximizing aircraft utilization during periods of relatively softer domestic demand.

"This collaboration with Vietnam Airlines enables Cebu Pacific to broaden its role beyond passenger operations by providing operational support to airlines across the region. It also creates new opportunities to diversify our revenue streams while expanding our presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets," Cezar said.

The deal also highlights Cebu Pacific's growing experience in aircraft leasing arrangements.

In 2024, the airline entered into a damp lease agreement with Bulgaria Air involving two A320ceo aircraft to help address strong travel demand in the Philippines. It also provided wet lease services to Saudi Arabian low-cost carrier Flyadeal in 2025, deploying two A320 aircraft during the Middle Eastern carrier's peak summer season.

What's next

The agreement comes as Cebu Pacific continues to expand its fleet and regional footprint. The airline currently operates 100 aircraft serving 35 domestic and 26 international destinations.

In 2024, Cebu Pacific signed a landmark agreement with Airbus and Pratt & Whitney for up to 152 A321neo aircraft, representing the largest aircraft order in Philippine aviation history and positioning the carrier for long-term growth in regional air travel. —Daxim L. Lucas| Ed: Corrie S. Narisma
