INSIDER INFO: Ex-lawmaker’s Cabinet prospects stall as corruption probe widens

Talks to tap an ex-lawmaker to replace an underperforming Cabinet secretary have quieted down amid a widening corruption scandal that has ensnared big names in politics.

The recent batch of high-level movements has seen Executive Secretary Ralph Recto settling into his new role while Frederick Go steps in as the new Finance Secretary in a move warmly welcomed by the business community.

Malacañang is taking steps to clean house, but the scale of the flood-control probe means other important parts of the vast government portfolio risk getting overlooked.

The name of this former lawmaker, who was also vetted for another position in a security-related cluster, was already making the rounds in business circles over the past few weeks.

That chatter grew from the need for a leadership reset in this department that’s falling well behind targets despite a rebranding effort a few years ago.

But things move quickly in this town, especially after the lawmaker’s name surfaced in the flood-control probe.

It was an unexpected revelation to some, but a few insiders in the business community were less surprised.

After all, maintaining the family’s political presence is costly, and there’s also this public servant’s rumored purchase of a luxury Makati property regarded as the more discreet—but equally pricey— address compared to its high-profile neighbor.
